What was the one particular image or event that really shocked you when you were in Sudan?

"Last time I went, there was a wee boy who had been taken to the north during the war (the civil war lasted 21 years). This kid
had been taken really young and sold as a slave to the Arabs.
He had refused to do what he was ordered to do so his captors chopped his hands off. He has no hand on one side and half
a hand on the other and he returned to the village 9 or 10
years later. We do not realise what life is like and it is a
harrowing story about what goes on in places ripped apart
by war and conflict."
